` So far for this painting I have finished my underpainting. I did a grissaille and I plan to glaze over certain spots to create little pockets of color. This process has been very tedious and time consuming as I did a still life filled with a bunch of tiny objects. Despite this I have had a lot of fun. I find painting the individual objects to be very rewarding and easier than painting one giant object. When doing the black and white underpainting, I focused a lot on values and making sure I had all three. I focused on where there were shadows as well as where there were the bright white reflections. I also made sure that each piece connected with the others well by creating the drop shadows that really brought life to the piece.
I struggled with some of the finer details and the objects were so small and it was hard to paint the fine lines. I decided that in some places I needed to simplify the piece in order to make the painting process more efficient and manage my time better.
I think my craft could improve in the Russian nesting dolls near the top left corner as well as the chess piece. I think the dolls look a little rushed and flat. They don't have all the values that they should and lack the fine detail that the rest of the piece has. I also think that the chess piece doesn't have all the reflections that it should have. It doesn't convey that it is a glass piece like it should.
